Visiting fellow Wouter Davidts will present the lecture "'As Pointless as a Yard Rule': Barnett Newman and the Scale of Art" on Wednesday 14th September. The evening will begin with drinks at the Ship Inn, South bank (Cnr. Siddon St.) followed by the lecture at 6-8pm at Griffith University Graduate Centre South Bank.
“I will argue in this essay that in order to unpack Newman’s rather complex and often seemingly contradictory understanding of the role and meaning of scale in art, it might be instructive to look beyond what Newman achieved on canvas and on paper. It certainly is correct to portray Newman as “a thinker who chose to develop his ideas both in painting and in writing,” yet there’s another medium that served his purposes equally well on rare occasions, albeit far more indirectly and hitherto largely under examined: photography.” - Wouter Davidts
This event is co-sponsored by the Brisbane Consortium for the Visual Arts.
